Changes to Elder Law are derived from the actions of individual attorneys who are advocating for their clients. Elder Law attorneys are leaders of their communities and the profession of Elder Law. They re-present a respected segment of the general population. The work done by the Elder Law Bar is designed to help others.
Even so, Elder law attorneys have some significant public relations problems. Large segments of the public are unaware of the existence of this relatively new legal field of specialty. Many people have little idea what Elder Law attorneys do and how those attorneys can help plan for the so-called “goldenyears” and resolve many problems of the elderly. This lack of awareness of what Elder Law Attorneys do limits the available clients.
A second problem for Elder Law attorneys is the general public’s negative image of the legal profession. Nevertheless, the solution may be fairly simple for the Elder Law attorneys to overcome. They need to go out to the public and tell their stories. They need to educate the general public about what they do.
An Elder Law attorney’s clients are often living an extended life and they are showing significant signs of frailty. These elderly try to live their lives with dignity. However, because of poor health which will require long term care, they face financial ruin. In advising the elderly and the disabled, the elder law bar enables their clients to retain their dignity.
An easy way to educate the public about Elder Law and the attorneys who practice in this legal specialty is by presenting seminars and speeches. Most counties have an Office on Aging or an Area Agency on Aging which are connected with senior organizations throughout the area.
These senior clubs often need speakers . Elder Law attorneys can obtain lists of these senior organ-izations and reach out to them. If members of the Elder Law bar tell their individual stories to these organizations, the club members can be expected to relate those stories to their friends.
In this new decade, Elder Law Attorneys are relying more on their internet websites and various social media accounts to get in touch with the public.
